A sleeping pad spec sheet usually lists two kinds of claims side by side, shell fabric and insulation, without making clear that they’re answering completely different questions. One is about durability and sustainability. The other is about whether you’ll actually stay warm. Worth knowing which is which.
What the shell fabric is actually for
Recycled ripstop nylon, the kind used in a lot of pad shells including ours, is a durability and materials-sourcing choice. Ripstop construction resists tears spreading if the fabric is punctured, and using recycled nylon reduces reliance on virgin polymer. That’s a genuine, worthwhile claim. It’s not, on its own, a warmth claim. The shell fabric’s job is to survive contact with the ground and whatever’s underneath your tent floor, not to insulate you.
What’s actually doing the insulating
Inside an inflatable pad, warmth comes from two things working together: the trapped air itself, which is a naturally decent insulator, and internal layers designed to slow heat loss further, commonly reflective film layers like Mylar. Mylar-film layers work mainly by reducing radiant heat loss, reflecting body heat back toward you rather than letting it radiate straight through the air gap to the cold ground. That combination, trapped air plus reflective layering, is what actually produces the R-value number on the spec sheet.
Why the distinction is worth making
It’s easy to read a list of material names and assume they’re all pulling toward the same claim. They’re not. “Recycled” tells you something about sustainability and durability sourcing. The R-value tells you something about warmth. A pad can genuinely deliver on one without the claim having anything to do with the other, and conflating them means either overcrediting a sustainability choice for warmth it isn’t responsible for, or underappreciating a durability choice because it didn’t move the temperature number.
Where our pad’s numbers come from
Our pad’s R-value of 6.6 comes from the Mylar-film insulation layers and the trapped air they help retain, not from the recycled ripstop shell. The shell’s job is separate: surviving being packed, unpacked, and lain on repeatedly without failing. Both matter. They’re just not the same job, and we’d rather label them accurately than let one material list imply more than it should.
