“PFAS-free” is a real, meaningful claim about chemistry. It’s also often dropped onto
a spec sheet with no explanation of what it’s actually replacing, or what trade-off comes with it. Worth unpacking both.

What DWR is actually doing

A durable water-repellent finish is a surface treatment, not the main waterproofing mechanism of a product. Its job is to make water bead up and roll off the outer face fabric rather than soak in. That matters because a fabric that wets out gets heavier, loses insulating loft if it’s sitting over down, and stops breathing properly. DWR isn’t what makes something waterproof on its own, that’s the job of the underlying fabric or membrane, but a fabric without a working DWR performs noticeably worse in real rain even if the base material is technically waterproof. The chemistry behind the claim For a long time, the best-performing DWR treatments used long-chain PFC chemistry, often labelled C6 or C8. It genuinely worked very well and lasted a long time. It’s also now understood to be environmentally persistent, the “forever chemicals” issue that’s driven the wider industry shift away from it. “PFC-free” or “PFAS-free” treatments, sometimes labelled C0, use fluorine-free chemistry instead, avoiding that environmental persistence entirely.

The honest trade-off

PFC-free DWR has historically performed somewhat less durably than the older PFC-based treatments, needing to be refreshed or reproofed more often to keep beading water effectively. Formulations have genuinely improved over the past few years and the gap has narrowed, but pretending there’s no trade-off at all wouldn’t be honest. This is a real decision between a treatment that lasts marginally longer and one that doesn’t carry a persistent environmental cost, not a free upgrade in either direction.

Where our own treatment sits

Our quilt and sleeping bag both use a C0, PFC- and PFAS-free DWR finish. We made that choice knowing it’s a genuine trade-off against the older PFC chemistry, not because it was the higher-performing option on paper, but because the environmental cost of long chain PFC treatments isn’t one we wanted to build into the product.

What this means for you day to day 

A PFC-free DWR finish will still bead water effectively when it’s fresh. It may need reproofing sooner than an older-generation treatment would have. That’s worth knowing rather than discovering the first time water starts soaking in instead of beading off.
