It’s a reasonable assumption: a lighter pack will feel more comfortable than a heavier one. It’s also only half true. How a load is carried changes how heavy it feels far more than the number on the label does, and the single biggest factor in that is whether your hipbelt is actually doing its job.
Where the weight is supposed to go
Most of a loaded pack’s weight should transfer to your hips, not your shoulders. Your hips and legs are built to carry load over distance. Your shoulders and upper back aren’t, not for hours at a time. A hipbelt that’s properly fitted and sitting where it should, on the iliac crest, the bony ledge at the top of your hips, does the actual work of getting weight off your shoulders. A hipbelt that’s loose, too high, too low or just poorly shaped for your body doesn’t, no matter how light the pack is.
This is why a well-fitted pack carrying a bit more weight often feels easier by the end of a long day than a poorly fitted ultralight pack carrying less. The number on the spec sheet doesn’t account for where that weight actually ends up on your body.
What changes when movement gets faster
Fit matters even more once you’re not just walking. Scrambling, fast hiking, uneven ground, anywhere the pack has to move with you rather than just sit there, a pack that isn’t hugging your body properly will bounce, sway or pull backward exactly when you need to trust your footing. That’s a stability problem as much as a comfort one, and it’s a big part of why we built the 40L pack’s harness around staying close to the body during faster, more technical movement, not just standing still comfort on a flat trail.
A quick way to actually check fit
Load the pack with real weight, not just air, and check three things: does the hipbelt sit on your hips rather than your waist or lower back, does most of the load feel like it’s on your hips rather than your shoulders once it’s tightened properly, and does the pack stay close to your back when you move quickly rather than shifting independently of you. If any of those are wrong, no amount of ultralight fabric is going to fix how that pack actually feels four hours into a day.
Worth trying before you trust the spec sheet
Grams matter. They’re just not the whole story, and a pack that’s technically lighter but doesn’t transfer load properly can end up feeling heavier by the end of a long day than one that weighs more but fits the way it’s supposed to. Try it loaded before you decide based on the number alone.
