If you’ve ever had a cold night camping, there’s a good chance your sleeping pad had something to do with it.

Most people focus on sleeping bags or quilts when thinking about warmth, but the insulation underneath you matters just as much.

That’s where R-value comes in.

What is R-value?

R-value is simply a measure of how well a material resists heat loss.

When it comes to sleeping pads, that means how effectively the pad stops your body heat escaping into the ground. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation.

This matters because the ground acts like a giant heat sink. Even on relatively mild nights it will slowly draw warmth away from your body if your sleeping pad doesn’t insulate properly.

Your sleeping bag or quilt traps heat above you, but once you lie on the insulation underneath it compresses and loses most of its warmth.

That’s where your sleeping pad comes in. It becomes the main barrier between you and the cold ground.

How R-value is measured

Most modern sleeping pads are tested using something called the ASTM F3340 standard. 

In this test, the sleeping pad is placed between two heated plates. One plate simulates body heat, while the other represents the cold ground.

It measures how much heat escapes through the pad. The result is a standardised R-value, which makes it much easier to compare the insulation performance of different sleeping pads.

What R-value do you actually need?

As a rough guide:

  • R 1–2 - Summer camping

  • R 2–4 - Three-season use

  • R 4–6 - Cold conditions

  • R 6+ - Winter camping

An R value of 4 usually offers a good balance of warmth and weight for most UK wild camping over spring, summer and autumn. If you’re planning winter trips, you’re best off going with a pad rated 6+.
